How to choose your outfits for your brand photography shoot.

You’ve booked your brand photography shoot, and your photographer has requested a planning meeting to get the ball rolling.

Exciting!  There’s only one thing that you’re a little anxious about - how to choose your outfits - what will you wear for your brand photography shoot?

As a brand photographer, this is a question I often get asked, and it’s a key part to our planning - so I’ve put together a comprehensive guide to help you choose your outfits for your brand photography shoot - ensuring that what you wear will reflect your unique brand character.

How to Choose Your Outfits for your brand photography shoot

Tip #1 Images that will stand the test of time

As tempting as it might be, make sure your outfits are not super-trendy - it won’t be long before they become dated, and your images need to stand the test of time.

And wear clothes that fit well, you’re comfortable in, look professional and reflect your values and brand character.

Tip #2 Pinterest - use it!

Solid colours work better than busy patterns.

Unless your branding is all about pattern, texture and colour, avoid patterns in your clothing as that will be the first place the eye is drawn to, and patterns can be quite a distraction. Pinterest is great for inspiration in helping you choose your outfits for your brand photography shoot - spend a little time browsing and pinning ideas to share with your photographer.

Tip #3 Don’t confuse your potential clients

Choose colours that complement your brand character and colours.

Include your brand colours in your outfit somewhere eg with a scarf, bag etc - and avoid colours that are a strong contrast to your brand colours - otherwise when your images are posted to your website, colours will begin to clash rather than complement, will not align with your branding and will serve to confuse visitors.

Tip #4 Annoying straps and see-through tops

Wear in any new shoes with socks around the house  - blisters will make your job of looking happy and relaxed in the photos very difficult!

And try on all of your new clothes a couple of times to make sure you’re happy with how they look on you. Sometimes a top we love on the hanger turns out to have annoying straps that fall down or is more see-through than we’d like. Or maybe the trousers don’t sit right with the top you planned to pair them with. Always check these things in advance so that you can find alternatives in good time and avoid turning up to your shoot feeling flustered.

Tip #5 Heels and quirky coffee shops

Plan out and try on each outfit in its entirety - and take a photo on your phone for reference.

This will help things run smoothly on your shoot day. Align your outfits with each location so that they feel as natural as possible. If you always wear heels to a meeting but wouldn’t dream of it at home, let’s shoot your smarter outfit in a beautiful hired office space or at your favourite coffee shop, then swap those heels for comfy jeans and a t-shirt for your second location.

Iron all of your clothes a few days in advance and leave them hanging up to keep them wrinkle-free. Bring a suit bag to your photoshoot if you can, plus a small wheely case for your shoes, accessories and props.

Remember, we’re telling your brand story with these images, so we’ll make sure it’s one that feels authentic to you, so that you can confidently post these photos on social media throughout the year
